As this is the first discussion post I want to tell you a bit about how and why I started this website. In 2010 I had the last of 6 surgeries to my lower back. That sixth being a complete lumbar fusion (L2-S1). My first two surgeries began in 1994 while I was still on active duty with the Navy. There were 3 others sprinkled during 1991 to 2010.
That last one was obviously the toughest one. For a few years before the fusion I had really started to gain weight due to physical inactivity. That did not change for a couple of years after either. Like I said it really kicked my butt and recovery was slow. By 2012 I had hit an all time high for my weight when I hit 270 lbs.
I still don’t know for sure how I got the epiphany to shrug off how I was living and eating but I did. I started researching nutrition and exercise. I read the book Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health by Dr. William Davis M.D., which explains how eliminating wheat from our diets can result in numerous health benefits, including weight loss. After a few months of following this I started feeling better and was loosing weight at a moderate pace.
In the fall of 2012 I began a Ketogenic diet which put the after burners on for weight loss. I also added Isometric exercises to the mix. I chose Isometrics because they are non-impact exercises but very good at strengthening muscles. By Jan of 2014 I had lost 50 pounds and was feeling better than I had in over 10 years.
A few months later I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. A condition in which the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone. So I was prescribed a thyroid replacement medication. Not far behind this I was diagnosed with low Testosterone. Wow what a double Whammy that was. So I began taking Testosterone Injections every two weeks. Talk about Wow! Within a month I found out what feeling really good was! My well being, sex drive and stamina all increased to a level I believe was what it was when I was in my 40’s!
So here I was a man aged 67 feeling and looking like he was in his 40’s well maybe 50’s but certainly not the late, late 60’s. As this process unfolded between 2010 and into 2015 I continued my own research and have been adjusting my eating and exercise lifestyle along with a careful selection of nutritional supplements.
As of this writing on 10/5/2015 I have maintained a weight of 215 lbs and a body fat of 10% for nearly a year. Which is as low as it goes for men of my age on the body fat table that came with the BF calipers I use.
Now to why I decided to share what I have learned. People around me started saying how fit and good I looked. For example as a bachelor I frequently eat out at my local Golden Coral Restaurant, It is the best place for a Ketogenic diet. They have loads of choices for, meats, fish, vegetables and fruits. And it’s a buffet so I can select exactly what I want. I’ve been eating there regularly for 5 years now and know most of the servers by name. One woman has been there the whole time and one morning at breakfast she up and asked me how old I was. When I told her I was 68 she was flabbergasted. She said that I was 11 years older than her and that she hoped she would look as good as I do when she’s 68. Bless her heart!
Another example is my massage therapist whom I visit every week. She tells me that I look very fit with good muscle tone. That I am unusual especially for my age. She says nearly everyone she sees are no where as fit as I am. Bless her heart too!
I gave you these two examples because these and others like them have gave me the encouragement to continue and to decide to share what I have learned with other men, especially like I was, who are over 60 and decomposing right before our own eyes. I now believe this doesn’t have to happen and can be slowed down drastically and even to an extent reversed.
