Month after month there are health websites that tout the medicinal qualities of various roots, herbs, and extracts. However, one of the most well-known extracts, with many proven health benefits, is simple extract of garlic. Garlic is about more than keeping vampires at bay! Garlic has been used by the Romans, Egyptians, and Chinese, for thousands of years. It’s an amazing relative of the onion family, and contains very few calories when consumed. It also contains high amounts of Manganese, B6, Fiber, and Vitamin C. Now, I know what you are thinking. The odor and taste of garlic can be somewhat of a social deterrent. However, the usefulness of garlic extract has no actual bearing on the odor or freshness of the garlic. Typically, aged garlic extract is used in order to eliminate these issues.
Aged garlic extract has antioxidant qualities that are beneficial to both the prevention of cancer cell growth and the promotion of healthy cell growth. Garlic extract has been clinically proven to lower cholesterol in patients with high levels of LDL. It has also been shown to increase HDL, or good cholesterol, and help lower blood pressure. All qualities that are extremely beneficial to preventing symptoms of heart disease. High blood pressure can lead to a variety of different health related illnesses, therefor preventing high blood pressure is beneficial for so many reasons.
My research has also shown that aged garlic extract has antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-fungal properties. For patients with stomach ulcers, especially caused by H-Pylori, garlic extract has been known to kill the bacteria completely. Because of these properties, garlic extract is highly effective in helping prevent flu-like symptoms and symptoms related to the common cold.
Going back to the antioxidant properties of the extract, my research suggests that regular use of aged garlic extract can help fight off the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and dementia. Protecting the bodies cells from damage and aging can help greatly reduce the onset of many different brain related illnesses.
Garlic’s ability to fight off infection, lower blood pressure, provide anti-oxidant properties, and help lower cholesterol, can greatly prolong the life of aging individuals. Add the vitamin and mineral benefits of regular consumption of aged garlic extract, and the usefulness increases exponentially.
With all that being said, some recent research suggests that garlic extract can even help prevent the loss of bone density, and help detoxify heavy metals from the body. Garlic extract has so many useful benefits that it would not hurt to talk to your primary care provider and see if using a daily extract could help you reap some of those benefits.
